Manchester City striker Erling Haaland powered the club to a 1-0 victory over Brentford on Sunday, keeping their Premier League title hopes alive and moving them within three points of leaders Arsenal.
The Norwegian striker continued his outstanding form this season, netting his 18th goal in just 11 appearances for club and country.
Haaland shrugged off Brentford’s defence to latch onto Josko Gvardiol’s long pass and fired home after just nine minutes.
However, the win came at a cost for City as key midfielder Rodri was forced off midway through the first half with what appeared to be a hamstring injury.
The reigning Ballon d’Or winner was visibly emotional as he left the pitch, having only recently returned from a serious knee injury that kept him out for much of last season.
Despite a subdued display overall, City held firm to climb to fifth in the table, tightening the title race once more.
Elsewhere, Everton brought an end to Crystal Palace’s impressive 19-match unbeaten run with a 2-1 win at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Palace dominated the first half and took the lead through Daniel Muñoz, who finished smartly from Ismaila Sarr’s pass. But fatigue appeared to catch up with them following their midweek UEFA Conference League win at Dynamo Kyiv, allowing Everton to turn the game around after the break.
Iliman Ndiaye levelled from the penalty spot after Maxence Lacroix fouled Beto in the box, before Jack Grealish scored his first goal for Everton—albeit fortuitously—when Muñoz’s attempted clearance deflected off him into the net.
“I thought Crystal Palace should have been out of sight, 3-0 up even, but we stuck at it,” said Everton boss David Moyes after the match.
Ange Postecoglou’s struggles at Nottingham Forest continued as his side fell 2-0 at Newcastle, leaving him winless in his first seven games—a club record stretching back more than a century.
Bruno Guimarães inspired the Magpies with a superb long-range opener before winning a penalty that Nick Woltemade converted for his fourth goal since joining from Stuttgart.
Forest now sit 17th in the table, the same position Postecoglou’s Tottenham side occupied when he was dismissed last season, despite winning the Europa League.
Aston Villa also maintained their fine form with a 2-1 victory over Burnley—their fourth win in 11 days. Donyell Malen was the hero, scoring twice to seal the points.
The Dutchman opened the scoring from Boubacar Kamara’s incisive through ball before doubling the lead after a clever assist from Morgan Rogers.
Lesley Ugochukwu struck late for Burnley, but they remain trapped in the relegation zone.
Meanwhile, Wolves’ woes continued as they conceded a late equaliser in a 1-1 draw with Brighton, keeping them rooted to the bottom of the Premier League table.
