Malawi’s government has confirmed that at least 13 people have lost their lives after four days of relentless rain triggered flooding across parts of the southern African nation.
In an update on Thursday, the Department of Disaster Management Affairs said it had received initial reports from 16 of the country’s 36 councils. So far, 9,598 households have been affected, with many families displaced by the rising waters.

While emergency teams present continue to respond on the ground, authorities set up 12 evacuation camps across six councils to shelter those displaced.
The department said it has begun distributing relief materials to affected communities, but warned that more support is urgently needed. It is appealing for financial and technical assistance from both local and international partners as search and rescue efforts continue.
