Honduran Military Pledges Peaceful Power Handover

The Honduran military promised on Wednesday to guarantee a peaceful transfer of power, no matter who emerges victorious in the presidential election on November 30, where the vote counting is still ongoing amid allegations of interference.

The armed forces in the Central American nation have previously engaged in political interventions and executed several coups, the most recent being in 2009 when they removed then-president Manuel Zelaya, who is the spouse of the current leftist leader, Xiomara Castro.

Armed forces chief Roosevelt Hernandez affirmed on Wednesday, “We have made our position clear.” He stated, “We have indicated that we will support and acknowledge the results that will come from the ongoing count conducted by the CNE electoral council, where two right-wing candidates are currently very close in votes.

Hernandez, who has ties to the outgoing administration, told Televicentro that the military would “guarantee the transition of the presidency of the republic.”

Right-wing businessman Nasry Asfura, who has the backing of US President Donald Trump, currently leads by a narrow margin in the counting against TV personality Salvador Nasralla.

Concerns about potential interference have been heightened due to repeated computer malfunctions that have delayed the tally, which the CNE is legally allowed a month to finalise.

Nasralla has alleged fraudulent activities during the process, supported by outgoing Castro and the trailing leftist candidate Rixi Moncada, who has called for the elections to be annulled.
