Yemen’s Houthi rebels have formally entered the widening Middle East conflict, launching a ballistic missile towards Israel in a move that signals a dangerous expansion of hostilities across the region.

The strike on Saturday comes as the war enters its second month, with mounting economic and geopolitical consequences already rippling through global markets.

A spokesman for the Houthis confirmed the attack in a video statement, declaring that the group had fired ballistic missiles targeting Israeli bases. Shortly before the announcement, the Israeli military reported that it had “identified the launch of a missile from Yemen toward Israeli territory,” adding that “aerial defence systems are operating to intercept the threat.” The missile was intercepted, with no casualties or damage recorded.

The Houthis’ involvement introduces a new front into an already complex war involving Iran, Israel, and the United States. The conflict initially erupted following coordinated US-Israeli airstrikes that reportedly killed Iran’s supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, triggering widespread instability and sharp increases in global oil and gas prices.

The escalation raises immediate concerns over maritime security, particularly in the Red Sea and surrounding waterways. The Houthis had previously targeted shipping routes during earlier hostilities, citing solidarity with Palestinians, but had not directly engaged in this phase of the war until now. Their renewed involvement threatens to disrupt key trade corridors, especially as traffic through the Strait of Hormuz remains constrained.

The Houthis’ missile launch marks a significant turning point, reinforcing fears that the conflict is shifting from a contained confrontation into a broader regional war with global economic implications.
