Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe hailed his team’s long-awaited away victory as the perfect platform to build on for the rest of the season after Saturday’s emphatic 4-1 win at Everton.

The Magpies wasted no time asserting themselves, with defender Malick Thiaw netting the fastest Premier League goal of the season after just 52 seconds.

Lewis Miley and Nick Woltemade then struck before half-time, putting the contest beyond doubt, as Newcastle stormed into a commanding lead.

Thiaw grabbed his second after the break to deepen Everton’s misery, while Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall’s late effort offered little consolation for the hosts on a disappointing afternoon at Goodison Park.

At the final whistle, Howe and his players celebrated in front of the travelling supporters, savouring their first away league win in the top flight since April.

“That was really important for us because we haven’t had that feeling enough, or at all,” Howe said. “I’m very pleased the players and supporters can finally enjoy an away win and take that positive feeling back to Newcastle.

“We still have a lot of work to do, and it doesn’t mean all our problems are suddenly fixed, but it’s a big moment for us. It’s a step forward.”

When asked if the result could be a turning point mentally for his side, Howe was cautious in his response. “Time will tell. I’m not going to make any big statements. There’s a long way to go.”

Everton boss David Moyes dismissed suggestions that the absence of midfielder Idrissa Gueye—sent off in their previous match against Manchester United—was the decisive factor in the loss.

“It could be that, but it could also be the quality of Newcastle United,” Moyes said. “They are a Champions League team, and you mustn’t underestimate them. They started well; we didn’t. They were better, more experienced, and deserved the result.”
