The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, says he endured political persecution under past administrations but refused to back down.

Speaking during a media parley in Abuja on Friday, Wike said, “If there was anybody that was tormented by a government, it was me. I never ran away.”

He also accused the previous administration of the All Progressives Congress (APC) under former President Muhammadu Buhari of allegedly attempting to weaken the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

“APC, under the Buhari government, had nearly wanted to kill PDP. Have they forgotten? By people like Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, and former DG,” he said.

Wike argued that the PDP remained the only viable opposition during that period, adding that efforts to destabilise it were resisted.

“When people talk about government making efforts to kill the opposition, the only opposition there was PDP,” he said.

He further alleged collaboration among political actors aimed at weakening his party, naming the governor of Imo State among those involved.

“APC government under Buhari then, through Amaechi and the former DG. In fact, with all due respect, my brother, the governor of Imo State now, played together to destroy PDP,” he said.

Wike maintained that despite the pressure, he never defected or sought protection from the ruling party.

“People like us said, no, it won’t work. We said it will not work. We never ran to Buhari to say please, let me come and join you. We never did that,” he said.

Wike also claimed he faced sustained pressure from anti-corruption agencies during the period. Despite this, he insisted he remained politically firm.

He further stated that political office reveals character and ambition, adding that politics ultimately exposes individuals’ true nature.
