Ugandan presidential candidate and musician, Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine, has said he survived two assassination attempts in the last two weeks.

Uganda holds its presidential elections next month and Bobi Wine has emerged a strong challenger to incumbent President Yoweri Museveni, who has been in power for 34 years.

In a statement on Tuesday, Bobi Wine said said that there was no level playing field for presidential candidates and the “military had taken over [policing] the campaign process”.

“I have to put on a bulletproof [vest] for me to be able to campaign. I’ve survived two assassination attempts in the last two weeks where bullets have been shot in my car and on the tires and the windscreens,” he said.

Uganda will hold its election in January 2021.

Kyagulanyi suspended his campaigns last week after members of his campaign team were injured and his car damaged.
