A proposed bill aimed at establishing a new state in the south-west geopolitical region has successfully passed its second reading in Nigeria’s House of Representatives.
The draft legislation, sponsored by Abass Adigun, who represents the Ibadan North East/Ibadan South East federal constituency, advanced during a parliamentary session on Thursday.
This bill seeks to amend the 1999 Constitution to form Ibadan State from Oyo State.
While leading the discussion on this bill, Adigun pointed out that although Enugu and Kaduna, previously the capitals of the old Western Region, have been transformed into states, Ibadan remains without state status.
This legislation adds to the growing number of proposals for the creation of new states across the nation.
Benjamin Kalu, the deputy speaker presiding over the session, has forwarded the bill to the constitutional review committee.
Last month, Rashidi Ladoja, the Olubadan of Ibadanland, urged President Bola Tinubu to facilitate the establishment of Ibadan State by 2027.
