Four children were killed and another severely injured on Friday when an improvised explosive device (IED) went off behind the Banki motor park in Bama LGA, Borno State.

According to the Borno State Police Command, the blast occurred at about 12:40 p.m. in Wajari ward, Banki.

Daso identified the children who died as Awana Mustapha (15), Malum Modu (14), Lawan Ibrahim (12), and Modu Abacha (12).

He said police officers quickly deployed explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) personnel to the site and secured the area, adding that the situation had since been brought under control.

Preliminary findings, he noted, indicate that the children had been playing with the device, which they reportedly discovered in the bush, when it detonated.
