The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has cautioned newly promoted senior officers to steer clear of corruption, abuse of office and indiscipline, warning that misconduct will not be tolerated.

Disu issued the warning on Monday during the decoration of officers elevated to the ranks of Assistant Inspectors-General of Police and Commissioners of Police at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

He emphasised that the promotions come with heightened responsibility, noting that the officers are now expected to operate as key leaders within the force and uphold the highest standards of professionalism and integrity.

The police chief stated that the officers must lead by example, maintain strict discipline, and ensure full adherence to the rule of law, stressing that any form of misconduct under their command would attract consequences.

“From this moment, you are no longer just senior officers; you are strategic leaders of this institution. You are expected to lead from the front. Your actions, decisions, and personal conduct must reflect discipline, integrity, and absolute respect for the rule of law. There will be zero tolerance for indiscipline, abuse of office, corruption, or dereliction of duty under your command. You must take full responsibility for the conduct of your personnel,” he said.

He also urged them to take full responsibility for the actions of personnel under their supervision, explaining that weak oversight often leads to indiscipline.

According to him, effective supervision must be consistent and firm, adding that commanders would be held accountable not only for operational performance but also for the conduct of officers under them.

Disu emphasised the importance of people-centred policing, calling on officers to prioritise professionalism, respect for human rights, and responsiveness to public needs.

He noted that ongoing police reforms are aimed at improving efficiency, accountability and public trust, urging the newly promoted officers to embrace innovation and discard outdated practices.

The IGP also announced that newly promoted Deputy Inspectors-General and Assistant Inspectors-General would participate in a strategic leadership retreat starting March 24, 2026.

He said the retreat, organised by the Police Reform Secretariat in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme(UNDP), would focus on strengthening leadership capacity, professionalism and modern policing standards.

The development follows the recent promotion of several senior officers, including the elevation of seven Assistant Inspectors-General to the rank of Deputy Inspectors-General earlier this month.
