Pupils of Central School Orji in Umuduru Community, Isiala Mbano LGA of Imo State, have reportedly been learning in a dilapidated mud structure with a leaking roof for years.

A civil society organisation (CSO), MonITNG, in a statement shared on X, revealed that a staff member of another CSO, Tracka, uncovered this during a visit to the school on March 18.

Pictures and videos of the school, as seen by News Central, reveal the sad reality that the pupils have been forced to endure.

The school’s structure is compromised by cracked mud walls. Worn-out zinc roofing sheets cover the structure, but there is no ceiling to shade the pupils from rain or sunshine. So, when it rains, rainwater pours directly into the classrooms, forcing pupils and teachers to struggle through lessons in uncomfortable conditions.

MonITNG further revealed that the pupils sit on bare dusty floors, while some even lie down or sleep during classes because there are no proper desks or chairs.

“The existing building was not constructed by the government but by the community many years ago through self-help efforts. Till today, the same community continues to maintain the school with the little resources they can mobilise,” MonITNG revealed.

“Currently, community members are trying to raise funds again to construct new classroom blocks because the present structures are no longer safe for learning. The conditions go beyond classrooms. There are no toilets in the school, forcing pupils to defecate in the surrounding bushes.”

The CSO further revealed that the school premises are overrun with weeds, making them unsafe for the children. Important school documents and students’ records are reportedly kept in the village head’s house.

According to MonITNG, the school is regularly used as a polling unit during elections, yet authorities have failed to prioritise its reconstruction.

It also appealed to the Imo State Government, the Isiala Mbano Local Government Council, and the relevant education authorities to replace the dilapidating structure with a safe, modern learning facility.

“No child deserves to learn under these conditions. The children of Umuduru Community deserve dignity, safety, and a proper environment to learn and grow,” MonITNG added.
