Benin Republic’s outgoing President Patrice Talon and his wife Claudine Gbenagnon Talon on Sunday cast their ballot in the country’s latest election, as voters headed to the polls to choose his successor.

Nearly eight million voters are eligible to cast ballots and choose who will succeed Patrice Talon, who is stepping down after two five-year terms and has endorsed Finance Minister Romuald Wadagni as his successor.

Backed by the two main ruling parties, Wadagni is being challenged by Paul Hounkpe, an opposition figure whose campaign has been very low-key and who reportedly needed help from majority lawmakers to secure the required parliamentary endorsements to get on the ballot.

If elected on Sunday, Wadagni is expected to command the support of the army, which played a key role in foiling an attempted coup against Talon in December.
