The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced a $14 million payout for India’s men’s cricket team following their emphatic victory to secure a record third T20 World Cup title.
India defeated New Zealand by 96 runs in Sunday’s final in Ahmedabad, delivering a commanding performance that confirmed their status as pre-tournament favourites. The win marks a historic milestone for the Indian side, making them the first team to successfully defend the T20 World Cup title and the first to claim the trophy on home soil.
The BCCI, widely regarded as the richest and most influential governing body in world cricket, praised the squad’s achievement as it unveiled the prize.
In a statement, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia described the triumph as a defining moment for Indian cricket, calling it a “historic achievement” for the players, support staff, and selectors involved in the campaign. Saikia added that the victory further cemented India’s standing “among the most successful teams in the history of the format,” highlighting the team’s consistency and dominance on the global stage.
The $14 million reward will be distributed across the entire contingent, including players, coaches, and support personnel who contributed to the championship run. In addition to the BCCI’s prize money, the team will receive $2.34 million from the International Cricket Council (ICC), while runners-up New Zealand are set to earn $1.17 million.
Cricket remains the most popular sport in India, commanding massive audiences and turning its leading players into national icons. The team’s latest success once again underscored the sport’s ability to unite millions across the country.
Following the victory, jubilant fans flooded streets in several cities, waving Indian flags, beating drums, and dancing to Bollywood music as celebrations stretched late into the night.
