A landslide caused by heavy rain killed at least eight people and left more than 80 others missing early Saturday on Indonesia’s main island of Java, disaster officials said.

The landslide hit villages in the West Bandung area in the early hours of the morning, after hours of continuous rainfall. Homes were buried by mud and debris.

“There was a loud rumbling sound, like thunder,” said Oyoh, a resident of Pasirlangu village.

“It had been raining non-stop since the morning, and then it (the landslide) happened. I immediately felt scared.”

Oyoh, 52, was evacuated to a government office with dozens of other residents, mostly women and children.

She said her house was not damaged, but her niece, her niece’s husband, and their two children were missing.

Abdul Muhari, a spokesperson for the national disaster agency, said eight bodies had been recovered and 82 people were still missing.

West Bandung Mayor Jeje Ritchie Ismail said the military, police, and volunteers were taking part in search-and-rescue operations.

He added that the work was difficult because the ground remained unstable.

The local search-and-rescue agency said teams were digging by hand, using water pumps to clear soil, and flying drones to help locate victims.

Floods and landslides are common in Indonesia during the rainy season, which usually lasts from October to March.

Similar disasters happened late last year on Sumatra Island, where floods and landslides killed about 1,200 people and forced more than 240,000 to leave their homes, according to official data.
