The death toll from the collapse of a multi-storey Islamic boarding school on Indonesia’s Java island rose to 63 on Monday, with rescue workers continuing to pull remains from the rubble.

The incident, which trapped over 150 students gathered for afternoon prayers, has been designated the country’s deadliest disaster so far this year.

While officials hope to conclude recovery efforts today, about half a dozen students are still unaccounted for.

Preliminary investigations suggest the collapse may have been caused by substandard construction, intensifying widespread concerns about lax building safety standards across Indonesia, a problem highlighted by a similar deadly collapse in West Java in September.
