INEC Updates Nigerians on Voter Registration Progress

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has provided an update on the ongoing nationwide voter registration exercise, highlighting progress in both online pre-registration and physical registration.

According to a statement issued by INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, as of Sunday, 14 September 2025, a total of 4,445,505 Nigerians had pre-registered online over the four weeks since the exercise began on 18 August 2025. Of these, 2,141,294 (48.17%) were male and 2,304,211 (51.83%) were female. The majority, 2,924,643 (65.79%), were aged between 18 and 34, while 1,112,344 (25.02%) were students.

Olumekun also reported that as of Friday, September 12, 2025, a combined total of 509,929 Nigerians had completed both online pre-registration and physical registration. Of these, 229,758 (45.06%) were male and 280,171 (54.94%) were female. Young people aged 18 to 34 made up 378,132 (74.15%) of this group, while 196,529 (38.54%) were students.

The commissioner noted that detailed registration statistics, including breakdowns by state, gender, age, occupation, and disability, have been uploaded to INEC’s official website and other platforms for public access.

Olumekun reminded Nigerians that online voter pre-registration in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) will close on Monday, 15 September 2025. For the following two weeks, physical registration will be available at designated centres, after which the exercise will expand to all 62 wards in the FCT from September 29 to October 8, 2025. Detailed addresses of the registration centres have been published on INEC’s official platforms.
