Inter Miami will be without experienced Spanish left-back Jordi Alba for their Club World Cup opener against Egyptian giants Al Ahly on Saturday, manager Javier Mascherano confirmed.
Speaking at a press conference on Friday, Mascherano revealed that Alba would miss the match at Hard Rock Stadium due to a leg muscle injury. The Major League Soccer side will also be without midfielder Yannick Bright, who has been ruled out of the Group A clash.
“Jordi and Yannick are not available for this game, but hopefully they will return for the second match,” said the former Barcelona and Liverpool midfielder, now in charge of Miami.
The absence of Alba is a significant setback for the South Florida club. The ex-Barcelona star remains one of the key sources of creativity, particularly in linking up with long-time teammate Lionel Messi. Meanwhile, Bright’s physical presence in midfield will also be missed, especially alongside the veteran Sergio Busquets.
Mascherano expressed frustration at the squad’s lack of depth going into the 32-team tournament. “Of course, we would’ve liked to have a full squad available. It would make us stronger. But unfortunately, we couldn’t bring in new reinforcements for the tournament,” he said.
Despite the challenges, Mascherano insisted his team were eager to embrace the international stage. “This is a unique competition, and we’re honoured to be part of it. We’re here because of what we achieved last season, and it’s a huge opportunity to test ourselves and see where we stand,” he added.
Inter Miami qualified for the tournament as hosts after winning the MLS Supporters’ Shield, awarded to the team with the best regular-season record. However, they were knocked out in the first round of the MLS playoffs by Atlanta United. The eventual MLS Cup winners were the Los Angeles Galaxy.
In a somewhat farcical twist ahead of the tournament’s kick-off, the pitch at Hard Rock Stadium was still being prepared when media arrived for Friday’s press engagements, with field markings yet to be completed. Mascherano remained calm about the situation. “We hope the pitch will be in the right condition. FIFA has plenty of experience with this. As always, we focus on what we can control.”
Miami are banking on Lionel Messi to inspire them on the global stage, with support from fellow veterans Luis Suárez and Busquets.
Al Ahly coach Jose Riveiro said his team was well aware of the threat posed by Miami, particularly by Messi.
“He’s still the same player, especially in the final third near the goal. His understanding of the game is remarkable, and his chemistry with Busquets and Suárez remains dangerous,” said the Spaniard.
“Our job is to limit the service to those three and try to force them into making mistakes. We know we need to be excellent in several areas to get a result,” he added.
