Ipswich Town finally ended their 16-year wait for victory over archrivals Norwich City with a thrilling 3-1 triumph in Sunday’s Championship derby at Portman Road.

Cedric Kipre opened the scoring for Ipswich before Norwich’s Oscar Schwartau equalised, but Jaden Philogene restored the home side’s advantage with a stunning 30-yard strike that sent the crowd into raptures. Substitute Jack Clarke sealed the victory late on to strengthen Ipswich’s push for promotion to the Premier League.

The result lifts Kieran McKenna’s men to ninth in the table, just two points shy of the play-off spots, as they look to bounce back from last season’s relegation setback.

Ending a run of 14 winless encounters against Norwich, McKenna was relieved to see his team finally prevail in one of English football’s fiercest rivalries.

“The big thing about a derby, especially with the record we’ve had, is getting the result — and it’s a great win, a convincing win. We were good value for the 3-1,” McKenna said.

“Our execution was mixed, but I loved our intent. We got from League One to the Premier League by being brave, and that’s what we showed today. Jaden’s goal was incredible, and we could have scored more.”

For Norwich, the defeat leaves them hovering above the relegation zone in 19th place and still searching for consistency under boss Liam Manning.

“To concede a poor goal like that, turning it over in midfield—it’s a great strike, but the timing really hurt us,” Manning admitted.

“The third goal sums up where we are at the moment. We can talk about tactics and plans, but without the basics, you don’t get results.”

It was Norwich’s first loss in the “Old Farm” derby since April 2009, while Ipswich celebrated a long-overdue and emotional triumph in front of their home fans.
