Authorities in Iran on Saturday, executed three men in the northern part of the country after they were convicted of rape, according to the judiciary.

In Iran, both murder and rape are capital offences punishable by death. According to human rights organisations, including Amnesty International, the country ranks as the world’s second most prolific executioner, behind only China.

“The three-member gang was quickly arrested after three women reported a rape,” Asiabi said, without providing further details.

Executions in the Islamic Republic of Iran are typically carried out by hanging at dawn. While most take place within prison grounds, earlier this month, authorities conducted a public hanging in the northwest of the country. The man had been convicted of raping and murdering a young girl, a case that provoked widespread outrage.
