Iran’s envoy to Ukraine, Shahriar Amouzegar, has dismissed Kyiv’s recent efforts to assist the United States and its Gulf allies in countering Iranian-designed drones.
In an exclusive interview with AFP, Amouzegar characterised Ukraine’s offer of military expertise and hardware as a “showy gesture” and a “joke.”
The comments come as Ukraine actively deploys specialist teams and interceptor technology to the Middle East, leveraging four years of experience defending against similar drones launched by Russia.
The diplomatic spat highlights the deepening intersection between the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently confirmed that Ukrainian experts have been dispatched to countries like Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE to help coordinate air defences against “Shahed”-style attack drones.
While Kyiv views this as a vital exchange of security assets with its strategic partners, Tehran maintains that Ukraine’s involvement is an insignificant theatrical display designed to gain diplomatic favour with the West.
Despite Iran’s dismissive rhetoric, the demand for Ukrainian drone-fighting expertise is surging.
As the conflict in the Gulf region exhausts conventional, high-cost missile defences, several nations have turned to Kyiv’s battle-tested, low-cost interceptor drones.
This burgeoning partnership not only marks a significant shift in Ukraine’s geopolitical role as a “drone superpower” but also reinforces the growing military alliance between Russia and Iran, which continues to alarm officials in Washington and beyond.
