Iran’s top diplomat announced Wednesday that an Arab nation would shortly bring a letter from US President Donald Trump, who has advocated for a nuclear agreement with the Islamic state.
Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told reporters during a cabinet meeting, “The letter has not yet reached us, but an envoy from an Arab country is set to deliver it soon in Tehran.”
He gave no details about the Arab nation’s identity or when the letter was sent.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s supreme leader, received a letter from Trump on Friday urging negotiations to reach a new agreement on Tehran’s nuclear programme or risk military action.
However, since Trump returned to the White House in January, he has reinstituted the “maximum pressure” programme, which Iran has rejected in negotiations.
Under the approach, Trump reimposed broad sanctions on Tehran and imposed fresh ones after withdrawing from the Iran nuclear agreement in 2018.
Citing Washington’s withdrawal from the nuclear agreement, Khamenei advised the government in February not to engage in negotiations with the US.
Additionally, he denounced this week the “bullying” actions of certain governments that demand talks that “are not aimed at solving problems,” but rather at “domination.”
