Kurdish security forces in northeast Syria announced Sunday that an attack by the Islamic State (ISIS) group killed three of their personnel.

This incident highlights the terrorists’ continued aggression in Kurdish-controlled territories of the war-torn country.

The Asayish security forces confirmed that an ISIS cell “targeted a patrol” from their convoy and the road security department on the Raqa-Hasakeh road.

Their statement noted the “escalating activity” of the terrorists. This roadside blast resulted in the deaths of three Asayish members, prompting immediate “sweep operations and investigations” to apprehend those responsible.

ISIS, which once controlled vast areas of Syria and Iraq, suffered a territorial defeat in Syria in 2019 at the hands of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and an international coalition. Despite this, the group has maintained a presence, primarily in Syria’s expansive desert regions.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based monitor with sources inside Syria, also reported Sunday’s attack, attributing it to gunmen “believed to belong to an Islamic State group cell.”

The Observatory added that the Kurdish forces were reportedly “accompanying an oil convoy” heading from Raqa province to areas under the control of Damascus.

This latest assault follows ISIS’s claim on Thursday of its first attack on Syria’s new government forces since the ouster of Bashar al-Assad.

The Observatory and SITE Intelligence Group reported that this attack, a remote-detonated landmine on Wednesday, killed one person and wounded three members of the Syrian army’s 70th division.

Reports of ISIS attacks in areas controlled by the new Islamist-led authorities since Assad’s overthrow have been infrequent.
