Prime Minister of Israel Benjamin Netanyahu has said on Monday that Israel is entering “complex and challenging days” because of rising tensions between the United States and Iran, following President Donald Trump’s threat of military action should Tehran reject a new nuclear deal.

“We are in very complex and challenging days,” Netanyahu told lawmakers in a brief parliamentary address.

“We are keeping our eyes open and are prepared for any scenario.”

He also issued a warning to Iran’s leadership, saying,  “I have conveyed to the ayatollah regime that if they make the gravest mistake in their history and attack the State of Israel, we will respond with a force they cannot even imagine.”

The Israeli premier noted the close military cooperation between Israel and the US, noting Washington’s ongoing build-up of forces near Iran and across the Middle East.

“The alliance with the United States has never been closer,” he said.

“Between the Israel Defence Forces and the United States military, between our security agencies and their security services, there has never been anything like this.”

Israel and Iran, long-standing arch-foes, confronted each other directly last June in a 12-day conflict during which the Israeli military struck Tehran’s nuclear facilities and ballistic missile arsenal.

Iran retaliated with drone and missile attacks on Israel, and later in the conflict, the United States joined Israel in targeting Iran’s underground nuclear sites.
