Israeli Agriculture Minister Avi Dichter unveiled a controversial plan on Thursday to forcibly displace Palestinian residents of the besieged Gaza Strip to other countries, proposing Libya as a potential host nation. Speaking in an interview with the Hebrew newspaper Maariv, Dichter claimed that many Gazans would be willing to leave the enclave if provided with adequate international support and resettlement options.
Dichter compared the situation to Syrian refugees displaced by their civil war, suggesting that Palestinians in Gaza share a “longing to build a new life outside Gaza” and believe there is “nothing to return to.” He pointed to social media as evidence of this ‘sentiment’ among Gazans.

Highlighting Libya as a possible destination, Dichter said the North African country’s vast land and coastline made it suitable for Palestinian resettlement. He added that investing billions in rehabilitating displaced Gazans there would economically benefit the host country as well.
In a statement that has sparked outrage, Dichter claimed that Gaza does not belong to the Palestinians, insisting, “Gaza is not their land; it’s here, in Israel.” He further asserted that those who lose their homes in Gaza could be allocated land elsewhere, framing the issue as not only economic but “existential.”
