The Israeli army announced on Saturday that Iran has overtaken Gaza as its primary focus of military operations, as airstrikes intensify across Iranian territory.
According to a Haaretz report, Israeli military officials confirmed that around 150 targets within Iran were struck by air force jets in the past 24 hours. The army claimed to have “created a safe route to Iran’s capital, Tehran,” allowing free operation within its airspace.
This strategic shift aims to expedite the return of hostages held in Gaza since the Hamas-led attack on October 7, 2023. Israel estimates approximately 54 hostages remain captive in Gaza, with about 20 believed alive.
Meanwhile, over 10,100 Palestinians are detained in Israeli prisons under harsh conditions, with human rights groups citing reports of torture, starvation, and medical neglect.
Israeli forces are also preparing defenses against Hezbollah, although the group is not currently mobilising.
Earlier, Israeli Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir and Air Force Commander Tomer Bar declared “the path to Iran is paved” as new airstrikes targeted Tehran. The initial large-scale strikes on Friday hit nuclear and missile sites, killing senior military commanders and nuclear scientists.
Iran responded with missile and drone attacks, claiming at least 78 dead and more than 320 wounded during continued hostilities on Saturday.
