An Israeli court has sentenced 15-year-old Palestinian Mohammed Basel Zalbani to 18 years in prison for his alleged involvement in an attack in the occupied West Bank.

According to the Palestinian Prisoner Society, the Jerusalem District Court also ordered Zalbani to pay 300,000 shekels (approximately $83,333) in compensation.

Zalbani, from the Shu’fat refugee camp east of occupied East Jerusalem, was arrested on February 13, 2023, on charges of resisting the Israeli occupation. His family’s home was also demolished during the arrest.

The Palestinian Prisoner Society’s figures reveal that at least 14,500 Palestinians are currently detained in Israeli prisons, including 1,115 children.

Tensions in the occupied West Bank have been escalating, with at least 915 Palestinians killed and nearly 7,000 injured in Israeli army and settler attacks since the start of the Gaza war on October 7, 2023, according to the Health Ministry.
