Israeli drones carried out attacks across several neighbourhoods in Tehran on Wednesday evening, killing members of the security forces, according to Fars News Agency.

It marked the first time since the Middle East war erupted on February 28 that drone strikes had been reported in the Iranian capital.

Fars said the drones flew over both southern and northern districts of Tehran, adding that “several members of the security force and the (volunteer) Basij force stationed at checkpoints were martyred”.

An Agence France-Presse journalist in the northern part of the city reported hearing a loud drone overhead.

Several explosions were also heard in the area, including one blast described as significantly stronger than the others.

It remained unclear whether the explosions were linked to Iran’s air defence systems or were the result of direct strikes.
