Israeli Soldier Who Served in Gaza Dies by Suicide

An Israeli soldier who served in Gaza and southern Lebanon has died by suicide after reportedly struggling with severe psychological distress linked to his wartime experiences, according to Hebrew media outlet Walla.

Daniel Edri ended his life by setting himself on fire inside his car in a forested area near Safed in northern Israel.

His mother told Walla that he had been deeply affected by what he witnessed on the battlefield, frequently transporting the bodies of fallen comrades.

“He told me about the horrors he saw,” she said. “He would say, ‘Mum, I smell the bodies and see them constantly.’”

His mental health reportedly deteriorated significantly after his service. According to his mother, Edri sought medical attention and experienced violent episodes that sometimes led to him damaging property in his flat.

Despite his military service, the Israeli army has reportedly declined the family’s request for Edri to be given a military funeral, Walla said.

Local media have also reported that 43 soldiers have taken their own lives since the conflict began, many of them believed to be suffering from war-related psychological trauma.
