The search for a 25-year-old Italian man ended in tragedy on Sunday when his body was recovered from beneath an avalanche in the eastern Swiss Alps.

A dedicated ski and climbing enthusiast, the young man had been missing since Wednesday in the Pontresina region, with authorities launching a major search operation after the alarm was raised on Thursday.

Rescue teams, supported by search dogs and helicopters, spent several days scouring the Val D’Arlas area before discovering the victim.

Originally from Naples, the man had been living in the region while working at the prestigious ski resort of Saint Moritz. His death comes during a period of extreme weather that has seen heavy snowfall heighten avalanche risks across the Alpine crescent.

The incident is the latest in a series of mountain fatalities this winter season.

Recent weeks have seen several skiers lose their lives as unstable snowpacks and persistent storms create life-threatening conditions.

Local authorities continue to warn that the risk remains high, particularly for those venturing away from marked and secured pistes.
