Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has urged greater efforts to empower women and girls, describing such efforts as vital to the country’s future development.

In a message posted on her Twitter page on Sunday, to commemorate International Women’s Day 2026, she joined Nigerians and the global community in recognising the achievements and resilience of women across the country and around the world.

Referencing the 2026 theme, “Rights. Justice. Action. For All Women and Girls,” the First Lady said advancing women’s opportunities should be seen as a strategic investment rather than an act of charity.

She noted that providing women with access to education, healthcare, economic opportunities, leadership roles and justice would strengthen families, communities and the nation as a whole.

The First Lady added that when women are given the support they need to thrive, the benefits extend across society and contribute to national progress.

“This year’s theme reminds us that empowering women is not an act of charity; it is an investment in our collective future. When we give women access to education, healthcare, economic empowerment, leadership platforms, justice, and equity, we gain stronger families, more prosperous communities, and a more inclusive nation. When women rise, Nigeria rises!” she said.

Similarly, the First Lady of Ondo State, Seun Aiyedatiwa, encouraged women to continue supporting and uplifting one another while contributing positively to society.

In a message posted on her Facebook page, Aiyedatiwa stated this year’s theme, “Give to Gain, stressing the importance of mentorship, collaboration and acts of support in creating opportunities for future generations.

She explained that when women invest their time, knowledge and encouragement in helping others succeed, they help create lasting opportunities not only for individuals but also for communities and generations to come.

The Ondo First Lady also praised women in the state for their resilience and impact across different sectors, noting that their contributions span homes, communities, businesses, farms, markets, classrooms, and public service.

“Women in Ondo State have always been pillars of progress. From our markets to our farms, classrooms to boardrooms, and public service to entrepreneurship, you continue to shape the future with courage and determination.”

She further urged women to mentor younger generations and support one another’s aspirations, adding that such collective effort strengthens families, communities and the wider society.
