JAMB UTME Chaos: Human Error, Not Tech Glitch

Alex Onyia, CEO of Educare appearing on todays edition of JASIRI talked about the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), which has become one of Nigeria’s most controversial education stories this year.

Originally a gateway to higher education, the UTME instead became a nightmare for thousands due to systemic failures—from poor internet connectivity to mismanaged examination centers. Many students claimed their scores didn’t reflect their actual performance. In response, JAMB mandated over 370,000 candidates to resit the exam, further igniting public outrage.

CEO of Educare, Alex Onyia

Alex Onyia, known for demanding educational accountability, revealed that the issues weren’t just system glitches—but human errors. According to his team’s audit, a critical patch update was either mishandled or not applied, exposing deep flaws in how vendors were selected and how the entire examination process was managed.

Despite calls for the resignation of the JAMB registrar, Alex defended him, crediting his public apology and transparency. Still, Onyia warned that if such failures persist, then resignation would be justified.

He also questioned the overall high failure rate—over 1.5 million candidates scored below 200—suggesting the problem is systemic and not limited to those affected by the retake.

The conversation closed with a call for a more robust feedback and analytics system to fairly assess student performance and prevent future disasters.
