Gabriel Jesus has been reinstated in Arsenal’s Champions League squad as the Brazilian forward edges closer to returning from a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

The 28-year-old has not played since January after suffering a knee injury during an FA Cup match against Manchester United, an absence that has significantly reduced Arsenal’s attacking options over the past year. However, Jesus has now resumed full training and was named among the substitutes in recent Premier League fixtures against Chelsea and Brentford, signalling his return to fitness.

Arsenal confirmed that Jesus has replaced teenage winger Max Dowman in their UEFA A list ahead of Wednesday’s group-stage clash away to Club Brugge. Dowman sustained an ankle injury while playing for the club’s under-21 side at the weekend, prompting the squad change.

In a statement, the North London club said the striker had been registered with immediate effect, making him eligible to feature in Belgium, while Dowman will now be unavailable for European selection until February.

Jesus’s return is a timely lift for manager Mikel Arteta, who has been struggling with limited attacking resources following injuries to Viktor Gyokeres and Kai Havertz. In recent weeks, the Arsenal boss has resorted to deploying Spanish midfielder Mikel Merino as a makeshift central striker.

Despite a defeat to Aston Villa at the weekend, Arsenal remain top of the Premier League table and sit in a strong position in their Champions League campaign, having won all five of their group-stage matches so far.
