An Israeli man attacked a 70-year-old Israeli woman with an axe in Jerusalem’s Old City on Wednesday, mistakenly believing she was Christian, Israel’s Channel 13 news reports.
According to the report, eyewitnesses stated that the suspect shouted “Christian” at the woman before violently assaulting her inside her home.
She sustained serious injuries and remains hospitalised. The attacker fled the scene, and Israeli authorities have not issued a statement regarding the incident.
Police suspect the attack was motivated by anti-Christian sentiment, as hostility toward Christians in Jerusalem has increased in recent years.
Clergy members and tourists have reported frequent verbal and physical assaults, including incidents involving settlers and Israeli police.
