Jobe Bellingham, the younger brother of Real Madrid and England star Jude Bellingham, admitted on Tuesday that he has “anxieties” about following in his brother’s footsteps after joining Borussia Dortmund this summer.
The 19-year-old midfielder, who moved to Dortmund from Sunderland, acknowledged that he was aware of the comparisons that would be made.
“It’s something you do think about. You have these anxieties,” he told reporters at the team’s pre-season camp. “I’m not perfect. I do think about these things, but that was down to the club convincing me that these things wouldn’t have much bearing on me.”
Jobe emphasised that his decision to join the German club was his own, stating, “This was a decision I made, and it’s for myself. My journey is not anyone else’s to understand.”
To distinguish himself, Jobe wears his first name on the back of his jersey, just as he did at his previous club.
He said his brother Jude was “extremely proud” of the move and advised him to “embrace it,” though he noted their conversations are not typically that serious.
Jobe, who often plays a deeper midfield role than his brother, also stated that he doesn’t want to be a “superstar” off the pitch. Instead, his focus is on being one of the team’s “highest-performing players” and keeping his head down.
Jobe has already made an impact, scoring one goal and assisting another in four games during his debut at the Club World Cup. Borussia Dortmund’s season officially kicks off on August 18 in the German Cup.
