Former US President Joe Biden is undergoing radiation and hormone therapy to combat prostate cancer that was first diagnosed in May, his spokesperson confirmed on Saturday.
“As part of a treatment plan for prostate cancer, President Biden is currently undergoing radiation therapy and hormone treatment,” the statement said.
Biden’s office had earlier disclosed that he was battling an aggressive form of prostate cancer that had spread to his bones, following tests prompted by urinary symptoms and the discovery of a prostate nodule.
At the time, Biden expressed gratitude for public support, writing on X, “Cancer touches us all. Like so many of you, Jill and I have learned that we are strongest in the broken places.”
Biden, whose son Beau Biden died of brain cancer in 2015, has long been an advocate for cancer research and awareness.
His health has drawn renewed scrutiny since a recent book raised concerns about his condition during his 2024 re-election campaign against Donald Trump. After a poor debate performance, Biden withdrew from the race in July 2024, endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris, who later lost the election to Trump.
According to the American Cancer Society, prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men and the second leading cause of cancer deaths.
It is particularly prevalent among older men, with studies suggesting that 80% of men over 80 have some cancerous cells in the prostate.
While hormone therapy can help shrink tumours and slow their growth, experts note that it does not cure the disease.
Meanwhile, Trump recently completed his second medical checkup of the year, with his doctor declaring him in “excellent overall health.”
