American singer Billy Joel is setting the record straight about long-standing rumours that he’s been arrested multiple times for driving under the influence (DUI).

Despite a history of car accidents, Joel maintains he has never received a DUI.

In his HBO documentary, “Billy Joel: And So It Goes,” he noted that his accident record includes crashing a car in East Hampton, New York, in 2002; driving into a tree in Sag Harbour less than a year later (which required him to be airlifted to the hospital); and hitting a house in Long Island two years after that. These incidents have been linked to road conditions and his battles with depression.

“You know, along with fame comes a lot of gossip and rumours,” Joel said in the documentary. “For example, there’s this rumour that I have all these DUIs. That never happened, but people keep repeating the myth.”

While he did enter rehab at the Betty Ford Centre in 2005 after his then-wife, Katie Lee, gave him an “ultimatum” about his drinking, Joel clarified in a 2013 New York Times Magazine interview that this was distinct from any DUI.

“I never had a DUI in my life. That’s another fallacy. Look at the police records,” he stated.
