The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) in the UK announced on Tuesday that no criminal charges will be filed against the ice hockey player who was arrested in connection with the death of Adam Johnson.
Johnson, a 29-year-old American player for the Nottingham Panthers, tragically died in 2023 due to a neck injury sustained when he was struck by an opponent’s skate during a match against the Sheffield Steelers, prompting widespread mourning.
Following the incident, British police stated in November 2023 that a man had been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter, though they did not release further details.
However, the CPS has now concluded that there is insufficient evidence to pursue a criminal prosecution.
Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor Michael Quinn acknowledged the shocking and deeply upsetting nature of Johnson’s death.
He stated that after a comprehensive review of the police investigation and all available evidence, the CPS determined that there is no realistic chance of securing a conviction for any criminal offence, thus leading to the decision not to prosecute.
In response to Johnson’s death, the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF), the sport’s governing body, has mandated the use of neck guards at all its events, including the Olympics and the men’s and women’s world championships.
