Guinea-Bissau’s junta leader, General Horta N’Tam, has lifted restrictions on most senior opposition figures, an opposition official stated, though one prominent leader remains under house arrest.
Fernando Dias, a main opposition candidate who claimed victory in November’s disputed presidential election, is no longer being sought by the military, Dias’s communications manager Gabriel Ye told AFP.
He noted that Dias “is not under house arrest” but must refrain from making public statements or engaging in political activities.
Meanwhile, Domingos Simoes Pereira, another leading opposition figure who was released from jail on Friday after months in detention, has been placed under house arrest.

Army commander Jorgito Biague stated that Pereira is the only one under house arrest for economic crimes.
He hinted that his case is in the hands of the judiciary and not the military high command.
Pereira was escorted to his residence on the outskirts of the capital, Bissau, where supporters greeted him.
The junta had imprisoned several senior politicians after overthrowing President Umaro Sissoco Embalo on November 26, just days after the presidential vote and before official results were announced.
Embalo fled the country, and Pereira was disqualified from the election for submitting his candidacy late.
On Saturday, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) welcomed the recent measures taken by the transitional authorities and called for the “full release” of Pereira, urging all parties to work toward a peaceful and credible transition leading to democratic elections.
