Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the banned Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has been sentenced to life imprisonment for terrorism, following his conviction by a Federal High Court in Abuja. Justice James Omotosho handed down the sentence on Thursday.

Kanu received life sentences on Counts 4, 5 and 6 of the seven-count terrorism charge, and an additional 20-year jail term for Count 3.

The judgment marks the culmination of a long-running trial that resumed earlier this year with Justice Omotosho taking over the case.

Kanu was first arrested in Kenya in 2021 in controversial circumstances, extradited to Nigeria, and charged with multiple terrorism-related offences.
