Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has been taken into custody at the Federal High Court in Abuja.
Sowore, who on Monday led the #FreeNnamdiKanuProtest in the nation’s capital, reportedly escaped when security operatives arrested several other activists. Later, he went on social media to confirm the arrest of 13 persons, including Nnamdi Kanu’s brother and lawyer.
Despite police warnings against staging protests near certain restricted areas in Abuja, Sowore insisted on exercising his right to peaceful demonstration, maintaining that he would not be intimidated.
According to Daily Trust, Sowore had earlier appeared at the Federal High Court for Nnamdi Kanu’s case. Before his arrest, he posted online: “Today, I met with Kanu Agabi, the lead lawyer for Kanu Nnandi, at the Federal High Court, and he disclosed that his team will be withdrawing from the case, leaving Nnamdi Kanu to continue his trial without representation. He was sure that it was completely political.”
As Sowore exited the court premises, a team of police officers reportedly approached him and requested that he accompany them to the station. After a brief exchange, the activist complied and left with the officers.
One of Sowore’s close associates, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed that the Commissioner of Police in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) had earlier extended an invitation to Sowore.
“He was going to honour their invitation. It was in the itinerary. I wonder why they were so much in a hurry,” the associate said.
