Kaduna Police Ban Pro-Obi Rally, Threaten Arrests

The Kaduna State Police Command has prohibited a scheduled rally organised by supporters of Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, in the state.

It warned that appropriate legal actions will be taken against any person or group that disregards this directive.

The rally was intended to commemorate Obi’s birthday.

In explaining the reason for the rally’s prohibition, the Command said that intelligence reports indicated certain criminal elements were planning to infiltrate and take control of the event, using it as a means to incite violence, create disturbances, and disrupt public peace in the area.

In a statement released by its Public Relations Officer, DSP Mansir Hassan, the command said that all types of political rallies and public gatherings of a political nature within Kaduna State are suspended until the official start date of political activities as set by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

“The Kaduna State Police Command remains committed to safeguarding the lives and property of all residents and will not hesitate to take necessary legal action against any individual or group found violating this directive”. The statement read.

The Command urged the organisers of the upcoming Peter Obi rally to cancel any gatherings or marches to safeguard public safety and avoid the possibility of disruption by troublemakers.
