The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Kaduna State University branch, has called off its strike just days after it began.
The union had declared an indefinite strike on Tuesday over long-standing issues with the university management, some dating as far back as 2009 and 2017. However, the industrial action was suspended on Sunday following the intervention of Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani.
In a statement, the chairman of ASUU’s Kaduna State University branch, Dr Peter Adamu, confirmed that the state government had taken steps to resolve the dispute by releasing funds to cover 60 per cent of withheld salaries from September 2017 and payments for SIWES supervision allowances spanning five sessions.

He added that the government had also committed to a timeline for settling outstanding payments, including five months’ withheld salaries from May to September 2022, promotion arrears, earned academic allowances, pension remittances from 2009 to 2019, death benefits, and group life assurance.
Dr Adamu noted that the state government had shown a willingness to implement the wage award and grant the university autonomy.
The union expressed appreciation for Governor Sani’s intervention, describing it as a welcome shift from previous administrations, which had allegedly victimised lecturers for engaging in legitimate industrial action.
