Kaizer Chiefs secured a vital 2-1 victory against Richards Bay on Wednesday, snapping a three-match winless streak in the South African Premiership despite playing much of the second half with 10 men.
Wandile Duba opened the scoring in the 21st minute, converting a cross from close range in Polokwane. Defender Reeve Frosler was sent off in the 48th minute after receiving a second yellow card, leaving Chiefs a man down. Ashley du Preez made it 2-0 in the 68th minute, capitalising on a well-timed pass from Yusuf Maart. Yanela Mbuthuma scored an injury-time header for Richards Bay, but it was too little, too late.
The victory propelled Chiefs to sixth place, 11 points behind league leaders Orlando Pirates. Meanwhile, Richards Bay extended their winless streak to seven matches and remain third from bottom with just five points from eight games.
In another Premiership clash, Cape Town City defeated third-placed Polokwane City 1-0. Thamsanqa Mkhize’s 56th-minute goal secured the win, further shaking up the league standings.
Kaizer Chiefs’ coach Noureddine Nabi, brought in to end the club’s eight-year trophy drought, will hope the team builds on this hard-fought victory as the season progresses.
