England maintained their World Cup qualifying campaign with a lacklustre 1-0 victory over Andorra on Saturday, while Austria and the Netherlands finally kicked off their qualification bids with wins.
Despite avoiding an embarrassing goalless draw, Harry Kane’s 72nd international goal was not enough to satisfy fans, who booed Thomas Tuchel’s side off the pitch in Barcelona.
England, ranked fifth in the world, struggled significantly against 173rd-ranked Andorra. While Tuchel became the first England manager to win his first three competitive games without conceding, this achievement felt hollow given the weak opposition from Andorra, Latvia, and Albania in Group K qualifiers.
Tuchel expressed his dissatisfaction, stating, “I’m not happy with the performance. We completely lost the momentum and couldn’t get it back. We ended up in a place that was not good enough in terms of urgency.” He added, “I was most worried in the last 20 minutes because I didn’t like the attitude we ended the game with. I didn’t like the lack of urgency. It did not match the occasion. It is still a World Cup qualifier.”
The win moved England five points clear after three matches in Group K, especially after second-placed Albania drew 0-0 at home with Serbia, where Rey Manaj missed a first-half penalty for Albania. Serbia was one of three teams, along with the Netherlands and Austria, making their first qualifying appearances after their Nations League playoff commitments.
The Netherlands started their campaign strongly with a crisp 2-0 victory over Finland in Helsinki. Memphis Depay opened the scoring after just six minutes, followed by a goal from Denzel Dumfries in the 23rd minute. This result propelled the Dutch to third in Group G, one point behind Finland and three behind leaders Poland.
In Vienna, Austria secured a 2-1 win against Romania, with goals from Marcel Sabitzer and Michael Gregoritsch. Florin Tanase netted an added-time consolation for Romania, who had squandered several late chances. Bosnia-Herzegovina currently leads Group H with nine points, following Edin Dzeko’s sole goal in their 1-0 home victory over San Marino. Romania, Cyprus, and Austria all sit on three points in that group.
