Kane Shines as Bayern Munich Extend Lead at the Top

Harry Kane found the back of the net in Bayern Munich’s 2-1 victory over Freiburg on Saturday, helping the reigning champions extend their lead at the top of the Bundesliga to six points. The English striker’s goal marked his 17th in 17 league appearances this season, ending a brief dry spell since mid-November.

Kane opened the scoring in the 15th minute, converting a pass from compatriot Eric Dier with a low strike that Freiburg goalkeeper Noah Atubolu failed to keep out. Bayern doubled their advantage in the 54th minute when Kim Min-jae powered home a header from a Joshua Kimmich corner.

Although Matthias Ginter’s header gave Freiburg hope with 22 minutes left, Bayern held on to secure the win, bouncing back from their midweek 3-0 Champions League defeat to Feyenoord.

Meanwhile, Bayer Leverkusen lost ground in the title race after surrendering a two-goal lead in a 2-2 draw against RB Leipzig. Florian Wirtz played a pivotal role in both of Leverkusen’s goals, assisting Patrik Schick’s opener and setting up Aleix Garcia for their second. However, Leipzig clawed their way back with a stunning deflected free-kick from David Raum and an own goal by Edmond Tapsoba in the closing minutes.

Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso admitted disappointment but remained optimistic: “Things could have been better, but they could have been worse. We’ll keep pushing forward.”

In another match, Borussia Dortmund’s struggles continued as they drew 2-2 against Werder Bremen despite taking a two-goal lead. Reduced to 10 men after Nico Schlotterbeck’s early red card, Dortmund initially seemed poised for victory with goals from Serhou Guirassy and a Marco Friedl own goal. However, Bremen fought back with two quick strikes from Leonardo Bittencourt and Marvin Ducksch.

Interim coach Mike Tullberg will remain in charge for Dortmund’s midweek Champions League clash against Shakhtar Donetsk, confirmed sporting director Lars Ricken.

Elsewhere in the Bundesliga, Mainz climbed to sixth with a 2-0 win over Stuttgart, thanks to goals from Nelson Weiper and Anthony Caci; Augsburg defeated Heidenheim 2-1 with a late winner from Keven Schlotterbeck; and Borussia Moenchengladbach faced bottom-placed Bochum in Saturday’s late fixture.
