Kano Deputy Urged to Resign Over Defection

The Kano State Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Waiya, has urged Deputy Governor Aminu Gwarzo to resign after declining to defect with Governor Abba Yusuf to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking to journalists in Kano on Thursday, Waiya said effective governance requires trust, loyalty, and a shared political understanding within the executive arm of government.

He argued that it would be inappropriate for a deputy governor who no longer belongs to the same political platform as the governor to continue participating in sensitive government deliberations.

According to him, while the decision not to defect remains a personal one, a deputy governor who is no longer aligned with the governor should not take part in routine council meetings.

He questioned where such an official’s loyalty would lie and warned that trust is fundamental to governance.

Waiya said resigning would be the most honourable option available to the deputy governor, hinting that he would have stepped aside if he were in the same position.

The remarks come amid ongoing political realignments in Kano State following Governor Yusuf’s recent defection from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the APC.

Waiya described the governor’s move as beneficial to the state, noting that alignment with the ruling party at the federal level would enhance Kano’s access to development programmes and federal support.

Governor Yusuf, who won the 2023 governorship election on the NNPP platform, said his decision to join the APC was aimed at strengthening cooperation with the Nigerian government and attracting more development projects.

Reports indicate that Yusuf formally defected to the APC at an event in Kano, alongside several prominent political figures.

The move reportedly included members of the Kano State House of Assembly, federal lawmakers, local government chairmen and councillors, significantly weakening the NNPP’s political presence in the state.
