The Kano State government has launched a Smart Transport Solution to improve road safety, enhance public transport monitoring, and strengthen security in the state.

The initiative, a collaboration between the Ministry of Transport and AS&J Company, was inaugurated by Commissioner for Transport Haruna Dederi, who described it as a major technological step forward for Kano.

Dederi explained that the system, while new to the state, has been successfully implemented in major cities worldwide.

He stated that it allows authorities to track vehicle movements in real time, hinting that the technology functions like “satellite imagery that is fed directly to government monitoring units.”

The commissioner noted that the platform would initially focus on commercial vehicles such as buses, taxis, tricycles, trailers, and tankers.

According to him, dashboards connected to the system will be accessible by the police, the Ministry of Transport, and the Cabinet Office to allow coordinated oversight and timely security responses.

Dederi said the system would eventually expand to private vehicles but emphasised that starting with commercial operators was necessary for immediate impact.

He noted that technological innovation is essential as Kano experiences growing urban traffic and rising population density.

He also stated the role of public-private partnerships in the state’s transport policy, hinting that such collaboration would provide investors with confidence, given a clear regulatory framework.

Dr Aminu Maigari, Head of Operations at AS&J, provided details on accessing the system.

He said the mobile app is free to download, while registration and KYC would cost ₦28,000, with a 10 per cent government subsidy available for the first one million subscribers.

Maigari said the system aims to enhance transparency, improve transport efficiency, and safeguard vehicles and property.

The state government plans to roll out the system in phases, with full implementation set for Monday, February 9, 2026, following educational sessions with transport unions and local government operators.
