Kano State Approves Climate Change Framework to Tackle Environmental Challenges

The Kano State government has approved a comprehensive Climate Change Policy Framework designed to combat environmental degradation and address climate change in Kano, located in north-west Nigeria.

A statement issued by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature, confirmed the approval, with the policy being championed by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf. The framework aims to protect public health, reduce emissions, and promote sustainable economic growth within the state.

Dr. Dahiru Hashim, the Commissioner for Environmental and Climate Change, presented the documents, noting that the policy targets several key sectors, including agriculture, energy, health, transport, education, and urban development. Dr. Hashim emphasized the policy’s focus on local solutions, global partnerships, and improving access to climate funding.

“This policy responds to daily climate challenges while aligning with global best practices,” said Dr. Hashim. Dr. Hashim further described the policy as a crucial tool for building a low-carbon and climate-resilient economy in the state, which will serve as a guide toward achieving a sustainable future.

Governor Yusuf expressed the importance of the policy to his administration’s goal of achieving economic resilience and inclusive growth. “It’s about securing a sustainable future for all residents of Kano State,” he stated.

The policy also positions Kano State to attract international support and funding, strengthening its leadership role in the region’s climate action efforts.
