Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has resigned from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), along with 21 Kano State House of Assembly members, eight federal lawmakers, and 44 local government chairmen in the state.
Spokesperson Sunusi Tofa released the statement, noting that Yusuf informed the Diso-Chiranchi Ward NNPP chairman in Gwale LGA of his resignation, effective Friday, January 23, 2026.
In his letter, Yusuf thanked the NNPP for providing a platform since 2022 and for leadership support. He attributed his departure to ongoing leadership disagreements and legal battles within the party, which he says have weakened cohesion and increased divisions at both state and national levels.
“Disenfranchisement among party members has created deep division and generated uncertainty,” he said. He added that the decision was made after careful reflection and in the broader interest of Kano State, taken in good faith and without bitterness, with a commitment to peace and progress.
The resignations were also announced for 21 Assembly members, eight House of Representatives members, and 44 local government chairmen. NNPP Diso-Chiranchi Ward Secretary Kabiru Zubairu acknowledged the letter and congratulated Yusuf on his record in infrastructure, urban renewal, health, education, and economic empowerment, while noting the party’s ongoing internal crisis.
The move follows Yusuf’s recent closed-door meeting with President Bola Tinubu in Abuja, which had sparked speculation about his political trajectory.
