Kano to Census Tertiary Schools

The Kano State Bureau of Statistics has announced plans to conduct a comprehensive census of all tertiary education institutions in the state from January 14 to 23, 2026.

The Statistician-General of the state, Dr Suraj Sulaiman, disclosed this on Saturday in Kano, describing the exercise as a critical step towards generating accurate and up-to-date data for effective planning and policy formulation.

Sulaiman said the 10-day census would capture detailed information on the number and types of tertiary institutions, student enrolment, academic programmes, and available infrastructure, including classrooms, laboratories, and libraries.

It will also assess staffing levels, staff qualifications and the operational status of the institutions.

According to him, the exercise aims to equip policymakers, education administrators, and other stakeholders with reliable data to support better resource allocation and improve educational outcomes across the state.

The statistician-general called on all tertiary institutions in the state to cooperate fully with trained enumerators and supervisors who will be deployed for the exercise.

He stressed that the success of the census depends largely on the willingness of institutions to provide timely and accurate information, noting that the data collected would shape evidence-based decision-making in the education sector.

Sulaiman added that the exercise would rank among the most extensive data-gathering efforts in Kano State’s tertiary education sector in recent years, offering a clearer understanding of existing capacities and challenges within the system.
